Where does the name come from? |
Adiyaman ismi nereden geliyor? |
Farin or Pirin (Perre) are
the oldest known names of Adiyaman. Later it was named Hisni-Mansur which was
said to have come from the Mansur castle which was built as a protection against
the Byzantines by the Emevi commander Ibni-Canen when he came into the region in
the 7th century.
According to another source the name Vadi-i-Leman
(beautiful plain) had changed with time to Adiyaman. Some also believe the name
could have derived from Yedi Yaman. Yedi Yaman were seven brothers who were
killed by heathens against whom they apparently had risen. It is said that the
graves of the brothers can be found to the south of the city.
